GPS signals are available around the globe, but your navigation system is not very useful in areas outside its map coverage area. Some navigation features such as real-time traffic data and WAAS also have limited coverage areas.
Here are some things to consider for navigation system purchased in the United States:
- maps for countries other than the United States and Canada are sometimes available but usually need to be purchase separately
- Canadian maps may need to be loaded from a personal computer
- even within the US, maps for Hawaii and Alaska are sometimes not included
Bottom line, you’ll probably need to look up your navigation system’s model on the GPS maker’s web site to see if maps are available for areas you might visit.
