Auto routing is a feature that calculates a driving route to a destination. It’s a basic feature on vehicle navigation systems but is often not found on less expensive handheld GPS models.
On systems without auto routing, you need to manually create routes by identifying each turn along the way. Otherwise, the GPS will only show an arrow that points straight toward the final destination.
This example screen from a Garmin StreetPilot shows turn instructions for part of a route that was automatically calculated by the navigation system.
